A traditional fry-up can really hit the spot. It’s a substantial dish featuring a combination of fried, grilled, or poached ingredients, typically including eggs, bacon, sausages, grilled tomatoes, mushrooms, baked beans, and toast. No wonder it’s sometimes known as “the full Monty”!

  • Serves 2 people

Ingredients

  • 2 pork sausages
  • 2 rashers of back bacon
  • 2 large eggs
  • 1 large tomato, halved
  • 4 mushrooms, sliced
  • 1/2 can of baked beans
  • 2 slices of bread
  • Butter for spreading
  • Salt and pepper to taste
  • Vegetable oil for frying

Method

  1. Preheat the grill and the oven to 200°C (392°F).
  2. In a frying pan, heat a little vegetable oil over medium heat. Add the sausages and cook for about 10 minutes until browned and cooked through.
  3. Meanwhile, place the bacon rashers on a grill tray and grill for about 5 minutes on each side until crispy.
  4. In a separate frying pan, melt some butter and add the sliced mushrooms. Cook until they are soft and lightly browned.
  5. Heat a little oil in yet another frying pan and add the halved tomatoes, cooking until slightly charred and softened.
  6. While cooking the other ingredients, heat the baked beans in a saucepan over medium heat until hot.
  7. Toast the bread slices and spread with butter.
  8. In a non-stick pan, fry the eggs according to your preference.
  9. Arrange all the cooked ingredients on a plate and serve hot with a sprinkle of salt and pepper.

Authentic Shakshuka: open the door to the Middle East

Shakshuka is a popular dish in Middle Eastern and North African cuisine. My favourite recipe combines poached eggs in a flavourful tomato and pepper sauce, spiced with cumin, paprika, and cayenne pepper. It's traditionally served with crusty bread for dipping, and that’s just the way my kids like it too!
